Post Office Box Bank

Full Disclosure: This very cool coin bank made with a real US Post Office Box door bears our label, but only because we have no idea who created it originally. We found this at a thrift store, a bit beaten up and without any labeling or even a combination. After we figured out how to open it (and documented the combination), we sanded, stained, and sealed it, but left it looking just a bit rustic. We even gave it a cork base, just to finish it off. Now that we know the combination, we'll share it with only you (but we'll keep it on file, just in case).

The brass door with the Grecian key design was made by the Keyless Lock Company and is stamped 1958 (we think; the last digit is questionable). In 1892, Indianapolis businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Arthur Jordan, founded the Keyless Lock Company. For decades, the company provided post office boxes and other fixtures for the USPS. Their locks are simple and practical, but, because they have no tumblers, cannot be picked. And the fact that some of them are still working over a century later speaks to the quality of The Keyless.

If we can ever find out who made this bank, we'll gladly give them credit. In the meantime, if anyone can tell us where to get old Post Office Box doors, we'll gladly create more of these!
